NCA Summer Camp |
 |
 |
The Needville High School Cheerleading Squads recently returned from a National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) summer camp at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, July 6-8. There were over 20 squads and over 200 cheerleaders there from around Texas. The Needville Cheerleaders received a large amount of awards and did a tremendous job at camp.
The Varsity Squad received excellent and superior ribbons on their daily evaluations of the material they learned and performed at camp. They were awarded the Herkie Team Award two days. This award is given each night after evaluations and is voted on by the other squads at camp. It is given to the squad which demonstrated all the qualities of an ideal team. They also received the S.P.O.T. Award on the second day of camp which is awarded to the teams for displaying excellent technique in safety, spotting and stunt technique. On the final day they received the Technical Excellence Award and Spirit Award. The Technical Excellence Award is awarded by the instructors for the team that best demonstrated motions, jumps and stunts; and the Spirit Award is the most prestigious award because it is selected by the all the squads at camp for the squad who had added the most spirit and camaraderie to the camp all week. Mascot “Betsy the Blue Jay” represented by Khendra Felton also attended camp. She did an extremely great job and received all superior ribbons on her skits she performed at camp.
The Junior Varsity Squad received excellent and superior ribbons on their daily evaluations of the material they learned and performed at camp. On the last day they were awarded with the Champion Chant Award where teams competed against all the JV and freshman with a chant they learned during the week. They also won Game Day Top Team which was another competition held using overall Game Day ability to motivate the crowd with a cheer they learned from camp. They also received the S.P.O.T. Award which is awarded to teams for displaying excellent technique in safety, spotting and stunt technique and making safety the number one priority.
Varsity and JV squads both received the spirit stick on several nights throughout camp and brought home a spirit stick. Only teams that show the most sincere spirit and enthusiasm thought the entire week at camp are chosen to bring home spirit sticks. Both squads received National Championship Bids. This is awarded to squads who have exemplified positive qualities as a team. Teams that received this award have been evaluated by their buddy on a list of requirements while at camp. These include, positive attitude, have earned a spirit stick and showing good sportsmanship. This bid is extended to teams to compete at any of the NCA All-Star Championships.
Throughout the week the NCA Instructors select individuals who display superior cheerleading techniques in the areas of jumping, tumbling, stunting, motion technique, leadership and dance to tryout for the NCA All-American team. Nominees were, Varsity squad members Senior, Brittany Jones; Juniors, Staci Fuchs, Katy Strouse, Lauren Duke and Annalisia Herrera; Sophomores, Megan Weber, Mallory Massey and Tatiana Nguyen and Mascot Senior Khendra Felton. Nominees from the JV squad were Freshman Jasmine Stredick, Rylie Schroeder and Amanda Herrera. Outstanding individuals who exemplify the best cheerleading skills during the tryout are chosen to be on the All American Team. These skills include 3 advanced jumps a spirited entrance and a perfected Camp Cheer. This award is based on a standard score sheet and is not a competition between individuals. Blue Jay cheerleaders who were chosen for the squad were Brittany Jones, Staci Fuchs, Katy Strouse, Annalisia Herrera, Amanda Herrera and Jasmine Stredick. Staci Fuchs had the highest score of all the individuals that tried out for All American and received an award for Top All American Cheerleader.
The cheerleaders are looking forward to the upcoming football season and are ready to cheer on their athletic teams and build superior school spirit. The cheerleaders are coached by Audra Grigar and assistant sponsor Heather Cordova.
