November 11th is Veteran’s Day and as part of our appreciation of Veterans and families, the Junior Class American History students will be coordinating a donations drive for USO throughout the month of November.
So you may be thinking, “What’s USO, and what do they do?”
Since World War II, the USO has been a steadfast supporter of military personnel around the world.
The USO’s mission is to boost the morale of service members and serve as the link between them and the American people by providing services such as:
- pre-paid phone cards
- e-mail services
- care packages
- mobile canteens in remote and sometimes unstable locations
- overseas and airport centers
- and of course, their most famous frontline entertainment tours. Through the years these entertainment tours have included celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson, Chuck Norris, Carrie Underwood, Toby Keith, and Carlos Mencia just to mention just a few.
A USO donation box will be stationed in Room 66 for the month of November and will be circulated around class for student’s contributions. Students should plan to contribute whatever funds they can, even as little as nickel or even a penny each day. Of course, larger amounts are graciously accepted. Funds will be totaled and recorded daily. It is anticipated that all Junior students taking American History will participate.
On December 1, the totals will be tallied up and the Social Studies Teachers will match those funds that are donated by the students up to $500.00.
With your help, this Christmas Needville can show its appreciation and support for our troops who serve their country everyday to keep us free!
