A MESSAGE FROM THE NURSE

Parents, please remember to call the school when your child is absent. If they are absent for two or more days, call before 8:00 a.m. and I will be glad to get their homework for them.

Medication must be sent in the original container. I cannot give medicine that is not properly labeled. A note with the name of the medicine, the amount to give, and the time to give it, must accompany the medication. I cannot give medication to your student unless you provide it. If your student has headaches, experiences cramps, or wears braces, it would be helpful if you would send a bottle of pain reliever (examples – Tylenol, Advil, or Aleve or their generic) to school. This would be here for them all year if the need would arise.

You will be notified when your student is due an immunization. If you receive a notice, please make sure your child receives his/her “shot” by the due date. If there is a scheduling conflict, please call me so we can discuss the situation and avoid any problems that may arise.

The nurse’s office performs screenings throughout the school year. Screenings for vision and hearing will begin in October. The eighth grade will also be screened for scoliosis (curvature of the spine). The seventh grade will be screened for acanthosis nigricans. The 77th Texas Legislature passed a law that requires school districts to screen all children in grades one, three, five, and seven. The rise in youth-onset Type 2 diabetes cases has heightened interest in children’s health, particularly when acanthosis nigricans has been present.

Acanthosis nigricans is a black-brown velvety marker that usually appears on the back of the neck. It is a result of too much insulin in the blood. It is a pre-diabetic condition and serves as an indicator of risk for Type 2 diabetes and other chronic health problems. Early detection and an intervention of diet changes and physical activity are important. If you child is identified with this condition, you will be notified and instructed to make an appointment with your doctor.

If you have any concerns or there is anything that I can help with, please do not hesitate to call me. I will help in any way that I can. The school’s phone number is 979-793-4250 and ask for the nurse. I want your child to feel good and do their very best in school.

Take care.
