Eleven 6th grade Needville Middle School students journeyed to Austin on Thursday, October 18th to help kick off Red Ribbon Week. The students arrived at Northwest Mall to hear area sponsors kick-off the Red Ribbon campaign in Houston. The students then boarded chartered buses to Austin where they had three tasks. Their first task was to be knowledgeable of the legislature and how a bill becomes a law. Each bus then had to elect officials – a committee member, one senator, and five representatives. The final task was to draft a law to be presented to the legislature which would address the theme of the rally, how will we stop students from wanting to do drugs? These drafts were then presented to the elected student senators and representatives. Each bill was introduced, discussed and then voted on. While touring the Capitol, the students visited the House and Senate chambers. |
